What is a Presbyter?
According to the Ancient Antiochene Church of God
The word "presbyter"
is derived from the Greek word, "senior" or "elder".
In the early Christian Church (the Apostolic period), the word referred to
"Pastors" that the head
pastor, the Bishop of a region,
allowed to "feed the flock" - what we may refer to today as a
"Pastor".
The title “presbyter” was used from the earliest time of the
church to designate those in authority. Presbyters were also in charge of
catechumens, those becoming true Christians. They taught proper and pure
doctrine. They were also in charge of the “order” of the Church and
made sure that worship was conducted orderly, according to the Word of God.
The early presbyters were responsible to the living Apostle. St. Ignatius of ancient Antioch would appoint presbyters over certain
churches and give them the authority to give Holy Communion. A true
Presbyter is also a “Rebbe”, or teacher.
The true presbyter becomes the “priest writ large”. A
mature presbyter retains the authority of an elder and the function of an Apostle.
In the Old Testament the “presbyter” was the “zaqen”,
the “bearded elder” (the Wise One). The title “Presbyter” is from
which the title “Priest” comes from.
Eric Willaim King is the official Presbyter of “The Ancient
Antiochene Church of God” in America
today.
