Understand the Condition of
Laodicea
Jesus
Christ sends his angel with the last counsel to the seventh church, the church
of Laodicea. The church of Laodicea had lost its integrity and no longer knew
how to make proper moral and spiritual distinctions. They had lost their sense of belonging to “the family of God”. They were distant from each other even
when together. Many families are like this today. Everybody with his or her
head in the cellphone.
The true Christian church is to be different from this
fallen world. The true Christian church is a world within a fallen world.
Christians are experiencing the fallen matrix but also the Divine Matrix. The
Laodicean Christians are full of indifference. The moral and spiritual
temperature of the church is lukewarm. There is no heat of passion for God and
many are left spiritually naked.
Jesus is pictured as standing outside the “family of God”
knocking at the door, trying to get back in. First the house must be cleaned
before one can let him in. The worldliness must first leave the house. The
worldly worship of shouting, screaming, applauding, clapping and praising man
must leave. God must become first in everything once gain.
Those who open the door for Christ may eat [Greek: deipnon –
“main meal of the day, supper”] with him. The anticipation of the great banquet
with the Messiah at his second coming is depicted here. Who will be there?
There will be a great wedding feast for Jesus and his true disciples. The
intimacy of sitting at Christ’s table and breaking bread with him is hoped for
here.
The knocking of Jesus on the door is a sign that He is
coming soon. Do you hear the knocks? Or are you sleeping through His
visitation? We are living in the imminency of Christ’ s return – we are living
in the Laodicean Epoch. The original
little city of Laodicea was built on “seven hills” like Rome. The number “seven”
denotes completion in God’s grand plan and this seventh church depicts the state
of the Christian church in these last days. It is a counsel that true
Christians must heed.
Ancient Laodicea was only twenty miles from Colosse and
apostle Pual shared letters with both churches. In his letter to the
Colossians, he urges them to read it to the church of Laodicea (Colossians 2:1;
4:16). We have shown in previous articles how the letter to the Colossians has
very relevant counsel in it for the church in these last-days.
The counsel to Laodicea shows that there is no room for
neutrality, you either really believe in Jesus Christ and your Christian faith
or you don’t. The Laodicean church saw itself as “rich” and “increased with
goods”. Today’s toys and gadgets may place one very easily in this condition.
The man who thought that he had everything, “the good life”, full of
materialism and good food – in his old age he sits and begins to think about
what is more important in life, family and God. Now it is too late, and he must
die alone. He even has no hope to see those in his family that remained close
to God, they kept the faith – they will enter the blessed Kingdom of God in
eternity.
So today, many who call themselves “Christian” are
spiritually blind. They cannot see God through faith. In his mercy God is
knocking while you still have breath to breathe. This counsel is addressed “to
the churches”, plural. It is our hope that the Christian churches today will
awaken out of their Laodicean condition and join the John Class, for the time
is at hand.
