Christians
and Sadness
Sadness….
all Christians experience sadness at times in their lives. Some people have had
pets – dogs, cats, even a fish or two. Some people have had very small pets and
some very large, like a horse or two. When we experience a pet die from natural
causes or from some accident it can be devastatingly sad. Some remember having
a pet as a child and maybe not taking care of it as they should have and as they have now grown older, they begin to regret their personal behavior and go into a
sadness.
Even worse, some experience the death of a child or a mother
and father. Family members who die can also have a devastating effect on us. We may remember bad decisions and perhaps how we have treated this or that person in
the past. We may become sad at our own sinful behavior. Sadness is a powerful
emotion.
Jesus Christ was not unacquainted with sadness. Jesus cried
while experiencing the sadness of others. Jesus continues to teach us to not be
overwhelmed by any emotion but instead to trust in Him and His supernatural
power to help us through. Jesus says; “Be of good cheer” (John 16:33). Jesus
liked to heal people of all their infirmities. Jesus is the ultimate healer; He
is God the son. In todays “fallen world”
we may experience tragedies and share in the tragedies of others. It is
extremely important for Christians to remain in God’s word and in prayer. Also,
Christians must gather around other Christians who are going through difficult
times while at the same time, understanding that peaceful “alone time” must
also be maintained by the sufferer.
As Ancient Antiochene Christians we stress the importance of
a daily walk time - with God. Those who cannot walk should still have a special
alone time with God as each personal situation permits. In these special times
with God, we may sometimes get memories of the past, both good and bad. When we
experience older memories of sadness these are times when we can participate in
inner healing through developing prayer and trust in God. God wants us to learn from our
past experiences, but not dwell on them.
We are to find God’s good in sadness. There is still good in
all situations for the child of God. Sometimes God asks us to “wait” for His
timing and a fuller healing. God uses time in His way for the betterment of all
His children. Our individual problems sometimes create sadness. In these cases,
we must learn to look at the “bigger picture”. Realize that God has plans that
we do not always understand, and that is okay. Begin to realize who you are in
Christ and the fact that you are still blessed in many ways. You are not perfect, but Christ Jesus in you is. He loves you.
God still has work for you – to help others. Our own
experiences can be a benefit when it comes to helping others. We can relate
better to others who are suffering. We can offer a greater hope. As Christians
we have the Comforter, the Holy Spirit. We must learn to “tune into” the
Comforter at all times. Though we live in this fallen world, we (as Christians)
are not of this fallen world. We must focus on our spiritual life and God's reality - and not so much the material reality.
God completely understands our times of sadness and has a
better reality in store than bondage to sadness. Trust Him, especially when you
don’t trust yourself. Trusting in God’s constant and supreme harmony is
important. When things seem out of harmony, they really are not. As we mature
in our Christian faith, we must realize that God’s presence is constantly
transforming us into our new natures. All that we experience is part of this
process.
Apostle Paul states we must move on; “…forgetting what lies
behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead.” (Philippians 3:13) Though this
is sometimes difficult learn to practice it. Stay with us here at “TheShepherds Way & Nugget of Truth”. Keep your Bible with you at all times.

that shineth more and more unto the perfect day."
