Christianity & Changing Cultures

Christianity & Changing Cultures

Culture changes. When we study past cultures of different nationalities, we see much diverse history. For example, in ancient Greece homosexuality was not seen as that big of a moral issue as it is today in the United States. As Christians we understand that homosexuality, along with other sexual perversions, is still a sin and not a Christian practice. Though traditions and cultures change the human sinful nature remains the same.

Mans core psychology remains the same. Traditions and human social practices vary from one age to the next but this does not change the sinful nature of the human mind. The basic fundamental conditions of human thinking remain the same. When we study the people of the Old Testament, we see the same moral struggles and issues that are going on today, thousands of years later. Though humans have matured in many ways regarding “respect” for women and also not being so “judgmental” over many sexual issues, we still deal with the archaic inclinations of the past.

Humans struggle with the same sinful thoughts in this modern age. The human collective unconscious has triggers and challenges for all of us even today. The Christian Bible tells us that there is another thing that has “not changed” – GOD. God is the same today as He was millions of years ago. Our Christian God is still all-knowing, all- powerful, and perfect LOVE. He is patient in our long experience of time.

In past ages and cultures our God has revealed Himself in different ways, as humans were able to understand the Infinite All. Creation will continue to learn from the Great Creator. We serve a God of true relationship. We (The Ancient Antiochene Church of God) teach that God created all material reality and that He has delt with this planet of ours through progressive ages, dispensations, and epochs. When we understand that children, after birth, must be guided (taught) and taken care of by the parents, we begin to see this pattern in all creatures great and small. God has reflected His “being” through the things of creation.

As we study human psychic history, we begin to see that its patterns are recorded in the Old Testament records of our Christian Bible. As Christians, we begin to understand that man has what is called a “fallen nature”. This inherited human nature is distorted and it sins. Humans are infected with what we call “original sin”. Humans instinctively are aware of this. They find themselves doing things that they know are wrong. Humans struggle with the “shadows” of their past and those of their ancestors.

Religion, philosophy, and psychology have tried to understand the sinful nature and to find a cure. Today people are also resorting to what they call “proper diet” and even psychological drugs to find the cure for sin. We are not against proper medical treatment, but people need to be careful. As Christians we believe that only God can offer the true solution to the problem. We also believe that the cure for sin and the cure which allows us to be placed back into proper relationship with God has become offered to us through the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Sin. Today, as in past cultures, people have also tried to deal with the sin issue by allowing themselves, instead of our Creator, to define just what “sin” is and isn’t - this allows them to “get away” with some of their distortions. False religions have created delusional answers to the sin problem. Atheists have decided not to be responsible regarding anything or anybody for their sinful sickness.

True Christianity is a process of maturity in our relationship with God. As relationships involve some mental, emotional, physical and spiritual work to progress so does our relationship with Divine Intelligence. Many have become lazy and “spiritually obese”. True Christianity will keep you fit and in spiritual shape. We have another strength as true Christians; we have the aid of the Comforter (the Holy Spirit) to assist us and give us supernatural strength. The Holy Spirit helps the Christian adjust the mind to have proper thought patterns and also to allow the “new nature” to thrive and grow. As Christians we have been gifted with the “new nature”. Thus, we have become truly “begotten” children of God growing in the “womb” of the Church.

Unless a person is born of the “water and the Spirit” he or she can in nowise inherit the Kingdom of God. We invite all Christians to continue to study with us here and share what you learn in your own personal ministry – your Christian life. Watch our talks and read our articles. Keep your Bible with you at all times.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
