Christians
& Fear
Even
as Christians we experience different types of fear. Sometimes when we watch the
news, there is so much bad news that we get worried about our children and the
wars, and the crime, etc. Things can seem overwhelming. It is difficult even at
workplaces when competition of a bad kind is swelling. We may feel that our
boss dislikes us, or some employee that is talking bad about us will ruin our
job. These are basic everyday fears.
Those of us who pay bills wonder if we will make enough to
cover all that we need. It is a worrisome life most often if one is young and
working in the city. We worry about transportation and car issues. Sometimes we
just worry about what others may be thinking about all of our so called
“failures”. Some families compete regarding such gossip issues.
So, there you have it, welcome to the “fallen world”. We
also deal with our own personal sins and bad behaviors. We sometimes get so
overwhelmed that we wonder why anything is existing at all. We sometimes allow
fear to hold us in bondage. God commands us, as Christians, to realize;
“God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
What ever we experience that is
“bad” and or sometimes even “evil” is not from God. It is from this fallen
world. On the other hand, sometimes our own bad decisions place us in a fearful
situation. Regardless of how bad fear comes, wrong fear is of the Devil and is not from God.
As Christians we must first recognize that we have an ultimate enemy, he is
Satan the Devil.
As Christians we must also realize that God “in us” has
already conquered evil and sin. This must become a realization in the true
believer’s life for true change to occur. The more we allow fear to guide our
thoughts the farther away we go from God. We must learn to deny the suggestion
that fear is somehow stronger than our God. We have been given authority in
Jesus Christ to cast out all fear. Jesus is telling us; “Let not your heart be
troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27)
Much fear that we experience is based on ideas that we
develop that will never truly happen. As Christians we must realize that we are
never really separated from our powerful God. When this fallen world tries to
dump its false reality on us, Jesus tells us; “Fear not, little flock; for it
is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.” (Luke 12:32)
Jesus tells us to “seek” His kingdom first, then we will see
things down here in proper perspective. Currently, we are experiencing a
temporary world. Remember where your true and final home is. This must be
practiced daily in our personal walk of faith. Two of the most powerful tools that
we have been given as Christians are LOVE and FAITH. It is through and by these
that we walk. The Bible explains that “perfect Love casts out ALL FEAR.” We
must learn to not tolerate fear.
There is a “good fear”. We should fear the Lord. We should
fear getting bad consequences for sinning. God has given us the reality of fear
to be used in the right way. If we are walking home at night, we should fear
going through dark alleys or going some place that we know is dangerous. In
this sense, fear helps us make proper decisions. We use the emotion of fear
properly in regards to protecting our own family members and children.
When it comes to most things in life, we should not fear.
Jesus has set us free from the wrongful use and power of fear. The Bible
reminds us that; “In Him (God) we live, and move, and have our being.” (Acts
17:28) In our mortal experience we experience many things – they all have a
beginning and an end. In eternity we only have the constant new beginning. It
is important to maintain the proper concept of life as Christians. We are only
here for a short time. How will we choose to spend our time down here? What
will we be remembered for? Will we be remembered as one who is a child of God?
Who served God and others? How we use all the emotions that God has given to us
is important.
Ultimately, we, as “begotten children of God” moving into
the process of Christian maturity (being “born again”), must realize that we
are reflections of God’s love in a “fallen matrix” (this fallen realm). Nothing
is perfect down here. We keep our eyes on the perfect God. Never give up. God
in you will continue to strengthen you. Turn away from fear and do not let it
enslave you. True freedom in Christ is your reality.
