Christotokos
By

“He
(Jesus Christ) is God, begotten before the ages of the substance of the Father,
and he is man, born in the world of the
substance of His mother.” (The Athanasian Creed 29)
The
Athanasian Creed agrees with what we teach here. It’s
in agreement with Sola Scriptura. The three persons of the Godhead (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) are of one
substance (ousia). The Greek word
for substance is ousia and
it can more accurately mean for us essence.
It was more Biblically correct to call Mother Mary “Christotokos”, meaning “bearer of the
Christ” or Kyriou (Lord). This agrees
with Sola Scriptura (Luke 1:43)
Jesus
received His human nature when He was born in the flesh through Mother Mary (Christotokos). We stay away from the title “Theotokos” because ultimately God has no
mother (Hebrews 7:2-3). Christ’s two natures are not mingled into one essence
but remain God the man and God the God.
We believe that Holy Mother Mary
did give birth to Jesus Christ
who became fully man and was at the same time fully God. So we accept that Mary
is “the mother of God”. St Martin
Luther also affirms this. Having stated that fact we must be careful with the
term, Theotokos (meaning “mother
of God” or “God bearer”) because of what the Roman Church has done to Mary.
They state that Mary is now a co-midiatrix
with Christ meaning that Mary has the mediation attributes of the Son of God.
This is blasphemy.
