Ancient
Druidism and the Soul
By Eric William King
We find in
our ancient records of the Druids
and interesting concept of the human soul. We must understand that their
understanding of spirituality was told in
complete parabolic stories. Some who have taken these literal have missed
the true understanding. Here, using some of our Ancient
Antiochene Records, we will unravel this mystery.
Again, we are
explaining the earliest Druidism,
before the Eastern Religions
influenced it much latter in time.
To the Ancient
Druid the Triune God created humans
to maintain an original - sinless
state - called Gwynfydolion or Gwynfyd. To
fall from this state was to partake
in the action of Balchder, which is equivalent
to what Christianity calls “sin”.
We could say
that they understood that a specific
number (only God knew the number) of souls “fell from grace” and entered the state of Annwn.
To be restored to the good state of Gwynfyd another spiritual place was created
called Abred. This Abred is equivalent to the Christian realm of Paradise.
Annwn
was a place, or state-of-being, similar
to Hell. If a soul went to Abred
(Paradise) he or she was purged, judged for
the work they had done - and purged.
Apostle Paul states a similar experience which Christians will have at “the Judgment Seat of Christ”. Though they are “purged” they still suffer some loss. “…the Day will
bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the
quality of each mans work. If what he built survives, he will receive his
reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through flames.”
(1st Corinthians 3:13-15)
Though these
ancient parables were never intended
to teach “reincarnation” they did,
over time and mixture with Greek beliefs, create a
teaching of metempsychosis.
The teachings allude to the idea that all souls existed with an understanding of the sinless state (Gwynfyd) but made the
wrong choices and sinned. This idea of pre-existence
should only be understood in the sense of God’s Sovereignty.
Meaning that God knew before hand all those who would “fall from grace” and
that only God knows the number of the “saved”
and the “unsaved”.
Remember,
these stories were never meant to be taken literally in the fullest sense. These were ancient teachings of the
battle of “good and evil” and
ultimately redemption for the truly repentant. After Abred was full and
all the saved “purged” it was to be emptied back into the state of wholeness, Gwynfyd. Currently mankind is in the state of byd-bychan which is man on this current “fallen world” with a limited freewill.
Much later in
time the famous Alexandrian Saint known as Origin took some of these ancient parabolic teachings (found in the Alexandrian Library) and began
teaching the pre-existence of the soul. His heresy was rejected by the Antiochene Church, and rightly so. Jesus Christ did not
teach metempsychosis.
These early
Druids also believed in an ultimate “Triune God” which to them
was represented by three “golden rays of
light”. They also believed in a coming savior that they called “Yesu”. Jesus in Hebrew is “Yeshua”. The
Romans and the Greeks were familiar with one of the “triad” creeds of the Druids which was; “The
three duties of every man: Worship God; be just to all men; die for your
country.” Sounds like a Christian statement to me.
Early
Druidism spread into Asia Minor,
where the original seven churches mentioned by the Apostle
John were located. Plato
himself stated that all the rich and true philosophy stemmed from the region
of the West…ancient Britain.
I hope that I
have continued to stimulate your Christian mind into serious study of God’s
Word.

the finished work of my Savior, Jesus the Christ,
