Christians
& Happiness
You
may hear somebody say to you; “Just be happy!” Is being happy that simple? Like
we can “turn on” happiness and “turn off” happiness? Well, we might say that our
feelings have a lot to do with what we are experiencing and thinking at the
time. The Bible tells us to “seek ye first the Kingdom of God” in all that we
do. Is this possible?
We all say things like; “I would be happy if…..” then we
fill in the gap with whatever it is that we may think we need at the time. Many
people believe that if they just had more material possessions, more money, a
new car, then that would make lasting happiness. The fact is, as we grow older,
we realize that materialism comes and goes like a new pair of shoes. We can
never find ultimate happiness in materialism. So how can we gain quality
happiness?
We can never stay happy all the time, that is unrealistic,
but we can find quality happiness to help sustain us even during times that we
are not happy. True happiness is spiritual. Yes, for the Chirstian true
happiness is accomplished in a living relationship with God. This happiness
that Christians have involves deep love, love from God the Creator. God is the
true Parent of the Christian. Christians gain the certainty of everlasting love
no matter what their condition.
We learn to “count our blessings” so that when things drag
us out of the state of happiness, we can refocus our thoughts on that which is
truly good. We begin to realize what we do have, and most of us have lots more
than we think. Jesus never promises us constant happiness, but He did promise
us constant unconditional love. The realization of God’s love in and through us
no matter what is happening is important.
Christians have dwelling, right within their own spirit, the
Comforter – the Holy Spirit. As we grow in the understanding of God’s word, we
receive gentle “thought adjustments” from the inner Comforter. As we mature in
our Christian faith, we learn to attune to the guidance of the Holy Spirit that
works within. This is key to spiritual maturity.
It is okay to learn to reflect on good times. It is also
okay and right to learn how to better create “good times”. By obedience to
God’s way, we can always create good times and good memories. It is our
heavenly Father’s plan to help us be truly happy.
True love is always sharing. Happiness comes when we learn
to share what we have with others without them asking. True happiness occurs
when we learn to forgive those who have hurt us. When we learn to be patient
with others just as God is patient with all of our imperfections then we grow
into a higher quality of happiness.
So, true happiness can not have roots in materialism. It
must come forth from the spirit. Also, true happiness is shared between us and
God, between us and others, it is never alone. Humility, forgiveness,
gentleness, and gratitude are good ingredients for true happiness. True happiness is always thankful.
Remember fellow Christian, God’s grace is always sufficient
to see you through any situation. Learn to rest in the love of our Lord, Jesus
the Christ.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
