Christians and Listening

Christians and Listening

Jesus taught all of His disciples to listen. There is a difference between “hearing” and true “listening”. To truly listen is to be mentally attentive to what you are hearing. It involves focus, concentration, and thinking. Somebody who truly knows how to listen can learn better than one who cannot.

Christians have the gift of the Holy Spirit which gives additional spiritual responsiveness to the hearer. Christians may “key in on” inspiration. Jesus stated; “My sheep know my voice, and they listen.” Jesus also stated that the true “sheep” will not listen to a stranger. As Christians, we must familiarize ourselves with the True Shepherd’s words. We begin this by daily Bible study and prayer.

We attain to proper understanding and meanings of God’s word as we learn to listen. We become spiritually alert, awake, and aware. Another way to listen as a Christian is to remain silent after reading portions of Scripture. Meditate silently on what has been received. Allow the Holy Spirit to talk to the heart.

Every good Bible teacher and Pastor/Elder is a good listener. (1st Samuel 3:10).  Also be aware that others need to be heard. People wish to be truly understood when they speak. When we listen to another talk, we should be alert to emotional reactions also. To key in on what another person feels is very important and is a skill that you can develop.

Listening is the art of learning. Remember, God likes us to continue to learn. It is nice if we can learn something new every day, even though it may be something simple or small. The next time somebody talks with you pay attention. Be kind. Be friendly. Even if the other person is upset try and listen anyways. Some times a good response is a simple head nod or smile.

We actually “listen” with all five of our human senses. We can “listen” with our eyes, ears, etc. Learn to become conscious of your environment by paying attention. Practice “attention” everyday.

Learning to truly listen with understanding is a treasure you can master and protect. You will learn more than you did before, when you really didn’t pay attention. In today’s world people have their heads buried in their cellphones. We need to look up and look out. We need to become personal with those around us and learn also to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ when and where we can as the Holy Spirit directs.

Please continue to study with us here at “The Shepherds Way & Nugget of Truth”. We pray that you truly listen to what we have to share and apply it to your personal Christian lives. We thank you brothers and sister in Jesus Christ our Lord and we pray for you all the time.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
