Christians
& Jealousy
While
teenagers, many of us find ourselves caught in wanting “new things”. The newest
clothes, the newest cool thing. If one of our friends gets something that’s
cool and new, we may find an inner urge to get one too. Some people struggle
more than others over jealousy. To “covet” what another person has is a sin.
Many overcome the idea of jealousy by rejoicing in what
others have and wishing them well. To some people there is no great concern
about the emotion of jealousy. This is a blessing. We could say that envy and
covetousness are synonymous. Jesus Christ tells us; “Take heed, and beware of
covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things
which he possesseth.” Unfortunately, many today try and “keep up” with what
their “well to do” neighbors have when it comes to materialism. Sadly, many of
these same people brag about how “spiritual” they are.
One neighbor yelled over the fence to his other neighbor;
“Life is a game and he who dies with the most toys wins.” The very next day
this boasting neighbor died in a car accident. Did he win? And if so, what? After
he died, he was forgotten in one month by the world, family, and friends. The
person who truly wins is the one who is remembered for what he or she did for
others because of living the true Christian life. Jesus is talked about 2000
years latter because of what He did for others and His love and compassion. He
is our example.
The world is deceived into believing that life is “matter”
and or that “life is in matter” so materialism is what counts for success and
right living. The Bible states that the rich and poor have one main thing in
common, when they die, they can’t take anything with them. People are blind and
walking blindly believing that life consists in the abundance of materialism,
and the latest fad.
When you die, will people remember you for what you owned? or who you were?
Truly living the Christian life is what counts, not
materialism. We leave the fragrance of our Christian faith with others who
spend time around us. We offer, as Christians, the things that truly last and
count – good friendship, loving relationship, caring, trusting, worshiping
together, praying together, helping one another. These are the true and
everlasting things – the things that count.
Real happiness is not in a pile of atomic energy. God leaves
us with the true “substance”, the work of the Holy Spirit in and through us.
Jealousy can create rivalry, envy, and the idea of revenge. These energies are
not used by the Christian. The Christian uses the energy of the will to
administer the will of Divine Intelligence, not his or her fallen will. We
understand that humans are placed in this Cosmic School to properly learn and
overcome the childish nonsense. We must hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and
apply what God teaches us. This takes spiritual exercise and work.
Jealousy comes because of fear. Fear of rejection or about
what others are constantly thinking. Jealousy is not a healthy attribute. We
must learn to go to prayer with God. Silent prayer is a Christian meditation.
Our focus should be on the eternal things from heaven, not on the material
things of this fallen world. We are to be good stewards of the things that God
has entrusted us with and realize that all that we “own” is God’s. We worry
about things that we do not need and then get mad at the Cosmic for not
providing them for us. Just because we want something doesn’t mean we need it.
You cannot genuinely love a person if you hold some kind of
jealousy against him or her. Jealousy is a killer of relationships. If we are
mature in our Christian faith, we will wish love on others and hope that they
get what they need to help them. Do not allow yourself to get upset over
something that another person has that you don’t. It is a waste of energy.
Apostle Paul tells us; “For all the law is fulfilled in one
word, even this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” This happens only
through proper understandings and Christian realization. God is teaching us all
of His laws and how to properly use them. To realize that you have everything
that you already need in Jesus Christ our Lord is true freedom. It is our hope
that you begin to experience this true freedom.
