Humility in Christianity

Humility in Christianity

Humility. Humility is one of the most important attributes for true spiritual growth - It is something that must never be lost, especially regarding our Christian faith and growth in our relationship with God. First, we could say that one must truly have an “inner contentment” for humility to take hold. As Christians we must be truly confident in our relationship with God. We must come to know Him as a Heavenly Father. We also should learn to understand Sophia, or the person of the Holy Spirit, as our Divine Mother.

Many Christians do not understand that God is a family. We serve the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – our God is TRINITY. We are in the care of our heavenly parents as we surrender to their guidance in all that we do. This takes humility in recognition that God knows best even when we might think we know better. Stay humble in your relationship with God first. This helps us to remain humble around others. “The Lord resists the proud; but he gives grace to the humble.” (Proverbs 3:34)

Jesus instructs us to come to Him as a mere child. Children have a lot to learn. Jesus says; “Whoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” This also means that we must always remain teachable. The Ancient Antiochene Church of God has been trying to teach American Christians about the true history of the Christian faith. In doing so, many Antiochene Christians have become frustrated by the number of Christians who really do not care about the history of their own faith. Many who call themselves “Christian” these days are not teachable.

There can be no real growth in the Christian experience without meekness. Meekness is essential for spiritual growth and healing. Humility has been called “the genius of true learning”. Pride, on the other hand, gets one into all sorts of trouble. One of the best ways to combat pride is to become aware of it when it tries to raise its ugly head. We need to learn to catch ourselves when we feel a “pride spell” coming on. Prayer is key. As the Christian matures, he or she learns that God is just a breath away. Prayer is key to remaining truly humble.

Try and catch yourself everyday in an episode of humility. Learn to listen to others even when you disagree. Pray that you let others complete their sentences before you speak and when you speak, speak thoughtfully. This should be practiced in all conversations. Also, listen for new understandings and respect other people’s experiences even when they greatly differ from your own.

Don’t get upset when others do not understand you. Do not feel that you need to “prove” anything. With God on your side, you have already won the peace you need – you will get through all trials. Learn to stop talking when others aren’t listening but stay at peace with them. It is good to let others talk about themselves sometimes and to respond with interest. It is rude to ignore others just because you may not understand them or communicate well with them.

As Christians we learn to have peace with many different types of people because our trust and happiness are not based on us but based on knowing that God is with us, experiencing with us everything that we are going through. As Christians we understand that we are never alone.

In the Christian life humility is absolutely essential. Remember, we serve the only true God – Divine Intelligence - yet we do not boast in ourselves. Nobody, nor anything has more knowledge than God. Our Christian God is Almighty. We cannot fully fathom the greatness of our God. We should always be brought to our knees when we even begin to consider His greatness. Humble thyself in the sight of the Lord and He shall lift you up.

You can still love those who disagree with you and learn to spend time with them too. Do not isolate yourselves from others just because you don’t like their political or even religious views – to isolate yourselves this way is nothing but prideful selfishness. Narcissists hang out only with other narcissists.

Finally, learn to be thankful that God is sparing your life so that you might share with others who do not yet know the love of our Lord. Knowing that our God forgives us everyday keeps us humble, especially with others who also fall short of perfection. The Holy Spirit will continue to grant you strength everyday as you walk in God’s love and share God’s undeserved kindness with others.

When you catch yourself saying something that you shouldn’t, stop. Take a breath. Forgive and be forgiven. Practicing forgiveness is a main key to humility.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
