Some Ancient Antiochene Christian dressing traditions.

Some Ancient Antiochene Christian dressing traditions.

It has become evident in the Ancient Antiochene Christian tradition that many of us like to dress wearing the Israeli tallit (prayer shawl). Some of us also like to wear a kippah (head cap). This is done to show that we are connected to the original Christian church. We were first called "Christian" in ancient Antioch (Acts 11:26). This is where it all started.

We also understand the true doctrine of the migration of the so called "ten lost tribes" of Israel. Only the tribe of Judah and a portion of Benjamin constitute the Jewish people. The other ten tribes, throughout time, migrated throughout Europe and settled in lands constituting new Manasseh and Ephraim.

Not all Antiochene Christians participate in this fun tradition of wearing ancient Israeli attire but many still do. We do not dress in the ancient Israeli style to be "Jews" and we are also not legalistic Christians, far from it.

We understand that we are not bound to keep any specific day for worship and we are not under any food law. We keep the traditional Christian holidays and eat just about anything.

We have been made fun of because of the way some of us like to dress. We want to make a point that we are different from the fallen world and so we try and live simple lives. We do not wish to offend anybody by the way we dress but it opens the door to sharing the Gospel with others, and this is a good thing.

Traditional Men's Sidelocks (Payot / Peyos)

In Orthodox and Hasidic communities, men grow long sideburns or locks of hair at the temples, following the Biblical commandment in Leviticus 19:27 not to round off the "corners" of the head. Some Ancient Antiochene Christians also practice this tradition. As a matter of fact, Ancient Antiochene Christians have been called "Hassidic Christians" because of this.
Hasidic comes from the Hebrew word ḥāsīd, which means "pious" or "devout". Ancient Antiochene Christians are most certainly "devout". We hope that this short article has helped other Christians to better understand us. We are not under any "law" to save us. We belive in the freedom of the true Gospel of Jesus Christ and we invite all people to visit with us and study with us here online at "The Shepherds Way (TSW) & Nugget of Truth".
